Creating Your Private Space
For telepsychology to be effective, the physical environment matters as much as the digital connection. To get the most out of your sessions, your personal therapy space should be:
Private: A room with a door that closes, away from family members, roommates, or coworkers that will be free from interruptions for the duration of the session.
Quiet: Free from background noise like televisions, music, or loud appliances.
Comfortable: A space where you feel safe to speak openly and have comforting items nearby (e.g. glass of water or tissues).
Technically Sound: Equipped with a stable internet connection and a device with a functional camera and microphone.
Understanding Telepsychology and PSYPACT
Telepsychology is the delivery of psychological services using interactive audio and video technology. It gives clients the opportunity to meet with psychologists in a digital environment, effectively removing the geographical barriers that can prevent individuals from seeking and receiving consistent mental health care.
To further enhance this accessibility, PSYPACT (the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact) was created as an interstate agreement which permits certain licensed psychologists to practice telepsychology legally and ethically across state lines in participating jurisdictions.
PSYPACT grants the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) credential to qualified psychologists and therefore significantly increases the pool of available specialists for patients, ensuring that high-quality, evidence-based care is accessible regardless of a client's physical location.
The Benefits of Telepsychology
Telepsychology offers several distinct advantages for modern mental health care:
Increased Accessibility: Ideal for those in rural or underserved areas that may lack sufficient in-person care options.
Convenience: Eliminates commute times and reduces the need for childcare or time off work.
Consistency: Makes it easier to maintain a regular therapy schedule, including during travel or inclement weather.
Comfort: Allows clients to engage in vulnerable conversations from the familiarity of their own environment.
Important Disclaimer and Safety Notice
While telepsychology is a powerful tool, it may not be appropriate for everyone. This determination is made by the clinician at the time of intake and is periodically assessed to ensure ongoing clinical appropriateness.
Client safety and privacy are our highest priorities. Mental health needs are dynamic; therefore, circumstances may change whereby telepsychology is no longer the safest or most effective mode of treatment. The clinician may determine that a client requires in-person intervention for their safety or for maximum clinical effectiveness, or that a higher level of care is warranted, prompting a referral to appropriate local resources.
